Made from synthetic fibres, polypropylene is a highly durable fibre that can even be cleaned with bleach, making it an excellent choice for busy homes, especially if you have young children or household pets! It can also be one of the most affordable type of synthetic carpet and can be use in most of the rooms in your house.
The latest technology developments in carpet fibres means that there are now many types of polypropylene yarns that all have their own unique set of benefits. And it’s just about the most practical flooring option that there is out there. It’s not just about practicality however, as well as coping with everything that family life throws at you, a polypropylene carpet retains colour really well so it won’t fade over time. This means your carpet will look newer, for longer but it also means there is a wide availability of different colours for you to get your hands on.
Wool is naturally insulating so a wool carpet will reduce heat loss and noise, and as wool absorbs Volatile Organic Compounds (or VOCs) found in the atmosphere, they also improve air quality. Wool is also naturally flame resistant and won’t produce toxic fumes making it a safe option to use in all areas throughout your home.
It’s easily maintained and has resistance to soiling due to the natural oils already present in the fibre, so responds well to cleaning. And wool has more resilience than most other fibres which means it has loads of natural “bounce back” qualities withstanding lots of foot traffic or furniture without really flattening. Lastly, wool is also a natural, renewable, resource, so it’s eco-friendly as well as making your home a truly comfortable environment.
Secondary backing is actually exactly what it says! It is the second backing applied to the carpet to reinforce the carpet piece, give it some dimensional stability and to help hold the carpet yarns in place. Our standard secondary backing is woven polypropylene and most people, including us at Ormesby Carpets mean this type of woven backing when we refer to “secondary bac”.
Felt backed carpets have a layer of felt applied to backing and do not technically need underlay as they could be glued straight to the floor. Sometimes they are used when fitting carpets with underfloor heating without underlay as a lower tog value can be achieved. But when applied this way, the carpet may wear more and therefore won’t last as long. When fitted with underlay the felt backing can improve heat and noise insulation and wear-resistance of carpet and is generally considered more comfortable to walk on.
Our soft fleece backing is a unique premium backing made by fusing together a fleece layer and a woven polypropylene backing, like our standard secondary backing. It combines advantages of these materials making it strong and stable as well as soft and insulating. The softer finish is also easy to install, and improves its heat and noise insulation as well as making customers carpets last longer.
We recommend that all our carpets are fitted with an appropriate underlay.
Underlay sits beneath your carpet and provides a range of different benefits. It protects your flooring against heavy wear and extends its lifespan. We recommend you look at options from our friends at interloor.com who specialise in comfortable and insulating underlay. Their products are ideal for most floor types and can be used under carpet and vinyl.
Twist pile carpets are one of the most popular types of carpet at the moment. The yarn is tightly twisted and heat set to give a defined, textured surface. They’re very hard wearing, so less likely to show footprints. Some of our more popular Twist ranges include Stainfree Ultra and Stainfree Rustique.
Saxony carpets are also made of twisted yarns, but they are set so the tips of the fibres remain a bit more distinct. They are generally longer and often heavier which creates a luxurious deep pile and a soft texture. Known for it’s super soft feel, our most popular saxony, The Love Story Collection’s Lasting Romance. Saxony carpets can tend to show footprints and vacuum marks and will flatten to some extent so we recommend regularly vacuuming and if you’re really concerned about the illusion of marks the “heathered” (speckled) colour options can mask any variation you might see from the movement in the carpet pile.
Loop pile carpets are made with looped yarn tufted through a primary backing but not cut. Level loops piles are all the same height, creating a flat smooth surface. This type of carpet is very durable and can have an even appearance. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks really well offering an extra element of practicality. All the top cloth for Ormesby Carpets Tile Division carpet tiles are a loop pile construction!
Loop pile can also be produced with differing pile heights, creating a textured loop pile. These textured traditional style carpets are often called “Berbers” and the term has become interchangeable with the multi-level loop style carpet constructions. Our New Royal Windsor carpet from the Wilton Royal brand is a great example. Although very durable, we don’t recommend loop pile carpets if you have pets, as the loops can often get caught and pulled-up by their claws.
All the carpets from our Stainfree, The Love Story Collection and Wilton Royal Brands are suitable for domestic use and can be used in any room in your home. We recommend you take your time looking for the style and colour you want first because the chances are it will be more than suitable for where you want to use it.
There might, however, be some features and benefits to the different types depending on what is most important to you if you’re stuck between a couple of options! If you have a busy family home and are concerned about stains and spills you might want to choose a carpet from our Stainfree brand. If you’re primarily concerned about comfort and a luxury feel, you should check out The Love Story Collection carpets and if you want something with natural resilience and bounce then Wilton Royal is the brand for you.
